- PRIME_IT I (C)
-
- Welcome to the magic world of prime numbers, which have fascinated
- mathematicians and others for centuries. Prime numbers have some
- characteristics unlike their non-prime friends.
-
- What do the numbers 30030, 210, 30, 6, and 2310 have in common?
- Do prime numbers ever end, ie, do numbers ever get big enough that
- they have to be divisible by some number smaller than themselves?
- Why don't they behave neatly and occur in some pattern that is
- readily discernible and predictible? Is their occurrence predictible
- if one can find the proper grouping? Is the proper grouping, if it
- exists, a function of one or more prime numbers? Does their frequency
- of occurrence approach a limit?
-
- This program allows you to do your own investigations over a limited
- range of numbers. Here you can generate prime numbers in any part of
- the region from 1 to 64500. It also allows you to check individual
- numbers up to 262144.
-
- The program itself is menu driven and self-explanatory. You can best
- learn the program by using it. You can generate all the prime numbers
- from 1 to 64500 in approx. 10 1/2 minutes on a standard 4.77 mhz PC.
- Of this time, over 3 minutes is spent writing them to the screen.
-
- The prime numbers, as they are generated, are placed in a 14000 byte
- buffer which is adequate to contain all the primes from 1 to 64500.
- The buffer contents can be directed to a printer or a disc file. In
- addition, all or part of the buffer contents can be redisplayed to
- the screen.
-
- If you generate additional primes or load a previously saved file,
- these actions will overwrite the buffer contents and you will have a
- different group of primes to examine. There is no need to clear the
- buffer, and no direct provision to do so. (although a little
- imagination will allow it if you are so inclined)
-
- This program is copyright under Federal law with all rights reserved.
- It is distributed on the 'shareware' concept and a small payment of
- $10 is requested.(pleaded for). If the shareware concept is to survive
- and continue to provide low cost software for the many users, the users
- are going to have to accept their responsibility and make the small
- payments that are requested.
-
- So try the program, play with it, you can't hurt anything and you're
- bound to learn something.
-
- This program has obvious classroom applications, and you are encouraged
- to make a copy for the math department at your favorite school.
-
- Sincerely,
- Joseph F. Galen
